Special Olympics Coach – Basketball
Description

Manages specified Special Olympics program for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Expected to schedule two practices per week along with competition schedule.

Responsibilities

Special Olympics Coaches must, with or without reasonable accommodations, be able to perform the following:

  1. Complete orientation, background check, and web-based training upon being hired.
  2. Communicate with Special Olympics Director as to the schedule of practices and competitions.
  3. Communicate regularly with Special Olympics Director regarding any program related concerns.
  4. Arrive at the practice site at least 15 minutes before practice is scheduled to start.
  5. Have practice or instruction set up and ready to begin on time.
  6. Be hands-on and actively assist athletes through activity.
  7. Keep all athlete information confidential.
  8. Responsible for proper use of all equipment.
  9. Responsible for maintaining safety for your athletes.
  10. Adhere to all policy, procedures, and codes of conduct.
Qualifications

Must be 16 years of age or older; must hold and maintain a current, valid driver’s license; must maintain insurability with automobile insurance carriers; CPR and First Aid certification preferred; must complete MUI and Rights trainings upon hire.

  1. Must demonstrate enthusiasm, strong interpersonal skills, communication skills and ability to work effectively with people with disabilities, Pioneer staff, and parents/guardians/providers.
  2. Be safety conscious and always promote safety.
  3. Ability to engage in activities requiring physical exertion. Ability to perform required duties under stressful situations without supervision.
  4. Successful completion of criminal background check.
  5. Successful completion of Class A Volunteer application and Concussion Training as required by Special Olympics Ohio.
  6. Knowledge of disabilities and proven experience with people with various disabilities in therapeutic recreation, community or related fields preferred but not required.
  7. Prior experience playing sports and/or coaching, and familiarity with rules is helpful.

Contract Period:       October 2024 through February 2025, 2 practices/events per week
